Are Dinosaurs Extinct?

Not when it comes to Search Engine Optimization, Keyword Research, and Internet Marketing. How does that relate to dinosaurs becoming extinct? I’ll explain.

Whenever someone wants to learn about SEO or Internet Marketing, they find a ton of information on the web. They also find a lot of confusing or conflicting information depending on which self-proclaimed guru wrote the ebook or the blog.

The terms used by many of these gurus are also confusing. One will call something SEO and another will say, no that’s SEM or that’s Internet Marketing.

Many of the gurus can’t really tell you the difference between just those three terms. Then to make it better they make up new terms for something we have been doing for years because they want it to sound like it’s brand new.

The truth is that search engine optimization and Internet marketing have not really changed that much since the 90s. The basics that worked then still work today.

Of course in that time google became a portal for searches rather than just a search engine. In that time social bookmarking came into play. In that time PPC became a factor in traffic and sales. A few things are actually new.

But the way to optimize a website is still the same. You always needed link popularity before there was a google portal to search from. You always needed to optimize your content for keywords without being spammy.

What has changed the most is that the search engines have gotten smarter and more relevant and there are a few new tools to use when doing SEO. Social bookmarking is an SEO tool, not something seperate from SEO. It’s part of SEO and part of any good Internet Marketing plan.

Another big change is the number of people claiming to get you a top 10 listing for your keywords in google in less than 30 days and the number of people who tell you that you will be rich in less than 3 months if you just buy their ebook or system.

The other big change is the number of new names that have been given to SEO methods that have been around for years just so someone can claim they have a “secret”.

But the dinosaurs of SEO are not extinct. Those who have stuck to the basics, those who have stayed honest, those who don’t claim to have “the secret”, and those who have achieved real success and a lot of return business from their clients are alive and well.

Don’t believe everything you read especially if it contains words like guaranteed google listings, secrets, magic formulas, magic pills for success, or the word guru. If those words and phrases are on the site you are reading, hide your wallet because you are about to be taken for a ride by someone who likely has no real SEO experience.

Look for people who have been around for awhile. read their blogs. Read their articles. Read their “free” ebooks. But don’t pay out a dime for promises that sound too good to be true.
