How Many People Use Search Engines

In a previous post about the percentages of people who use Google and other search engines, I mentioned that some SEOs are too focused on what they read about how many people use Google vs. other search engines and how you need to diversify how you get traffic to your website by using several methods rather than focusing just on google.

This post in Search Engine Watch emphasizes what I was talking about.

Pew Internet & American Life Project: 49% Use Search Daily

How often do people use a search engine?

The percentage of Internet users who use search engines on a typical day has soared from about one-third of all users in 2002, to a new high of just under one half (49%), according to the latest study from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

So 49% of Internet users use search engines. How much of your SEO and marketing budget is based on just ranking well in search engines? How much just on optimizing for Google? If 49% of Internet users use search and Google has 60% of the searches, then Google is responsible for how 30% of Internet users find web content.

That is a very important chunk of business, but what about the other 70% of Internet users who do not use Google? How about the other 51% of users that do not use search engines? Are you targeting them at all?

Read my post about diversifying the methods you use to bring traffic to your website here and then give me a call to discuss how we can help you get traffic from many different sources.
