On most template websites, the majority of the templates are dreamweaver junk that takes more time to edit than to build a site from scratch. Many of them use height tags so much that you can only insert the exact amount of words the designer decided you should have or the template breaks apart.

I understand that designers are mostly interested in just that, the look of the site, and not the functionality or the optimization of the site, but I need a variety of good basic html templates that have a professional look and feel, but allow a lot of editing without breaking the template apart.

if you can provide me with templates, I’ll give you tons of backlinks and maybe even trade some seo work depending on what you need done.

Anyone want to make a few templates and make a deal?

Many people who start an online business really have no idea about what goes into building and promoting an online business. The first thing I want to point out is that search engines crawl and rank web pages, not websites. This means every single page in your website is important.

Each web page has the potential for ranking well for the terms your target audience search for. Your filenames, title tags, Meta tags, image names, alt tags, and content all help you get better results when done properly.

But can one person do it all? Let’s take a look at all of the elements to building and promoting a website or even just a web page.

1. Design - Typically, web designers are focused on how your website looks and not on the other elements of building a web page or website.

2. Content Writers - Most good website content writers do a fairly good job of writing content and using your keywords and phrases. However, many do not understand semantics.

Semantics is where although you are targeting a specific keyword or phrase on a web page, you also need to use other related keywords and phrases on the page.

Example: Let’s say you want to target the phrase “content service”. You can name the web page content-service.html, contentservice.html, or content_service.html. Your title tag can also say Content Service or Content Services, a variation of the same key phrase. Then an H1 tag with the same phrase at the top of the page will help.

Of course you need that phrase repeated in the first paragraph and a couple of other places on the page. How many times depends on the amount of text you plan to use.

But you also need to type that phrase into the google keywords tool. The google keywords tool will give you a list of keywords and phrases it associates with your target key phrase. You need to use some of those phrases in your web page content as well.

When you name the file name, create the title tag, and H1 tag, you are telling the search engine spider what search term you want your web page to rank for. When the spider crawls, it will not only search for that keyword or phrase, it will also search for words that it considers relative to that phrase. If it finds those related keywords and phrases, your web page will rank higher than others who did not follow your example.

If it were all about keyword density and percentages, you could just fill your web page with gibberish and add your target keyword or phrase several times on the web page and it would rank well. (It has happened. Google uses semantics to stop it from happening.)

Ok, we talked about having a web designer and a content writer. Let’s move on.

3. Onsite Search Engine Optimization - While web designers focus on how your web page looks, an SEO Expert looks at how the navigation works and how the code is written to make sure there are no barriers to getting crawled and ranking better in the search engines.

4. SEM, PPC Management, Offsite SEO, Website Promotion, and Internet Marketing – While many consider themselves experts only in specific fields, such as PPC Management and others have different names for what they do, it really all falls under the heading Internet Marketing.

SEM strictly focuses on getting you more search engine traffic and also crosses over into link building and PPC, while Internet Marketing encompasses much more. Buying advertising, viral marketing, link bait, and more would fall under the heading of Internet Marketing.

5. A Sales Consultant - You need a sales consultant to help you with where to put calls to action and other things that get the user to do what you want them to do. Converting sales is what it is all about and you need someone that is good at web sales to look your website over.

So, do you need 5 people to build a web page? Some designers know a little about SEO. Some SEO Experts also know Internet Marketing. Some website content writers know a little about sales.

So you may not need 5 people, but you do need 5 skill sets in order to give each page in your website not only the ability to rank well in the search engines, but also to make sure it converts sales, generates leads, convinces people to sign up for your newsletter, buy a membership, or whatever you are asking your visitors to do.

Why have several people with conflicting skills working on the same web page, when one person with the right skill sets can handle it all? At SEO Service Provider.com, you get an SEO Expert that has more than 30 years of sales experience, 14 of those years selling on the web, someone who knows onsite optimization and Internet Marketing. We even handle your website design so we can optimize each page of your website as we build it.

Well, this is good news for many SEO people who try to get good search engine listings for their clients despite all of the flash put into their websites.

Google will be crawling the TEXT in flash files. Not text embedded in the images. Not the images. Not the animations. The TEXT.

So word needs to go out to all of you flash designers out there. Use more keyword-rich text in the flash you create for clients.

Unfortunately most web designers are so interested in design they ignore SEO altogether. I’m not sure this will mean flash designers will now try to optimize the flash so it contains keyword-rich text. Likely an SEO person will have to get them to do it after-the-fact as usual. But we can hope.

The New Web Business Guide Introduction can be found here.

We have mostly discussed the basics, getting a domain name, choosing a hosting company, and getting your website built. If you are just going to have a static website, then you may not need this chapter, but there are some benefits to the different things you can add to your website.

Here is a short list of website addons and the benefit you might get from them;

1. Guestbook. This is one of the oldest website addons and most people do not use them anymore. It is where visitors to your website can sign your guestbook and leave a link back to their website. (Not recommended by us at all. Constant management required and spammers love guestbooks.)

2. Article Dashboard Directory A lot of people will tell you that unless you are in the article marketing or article directory business that you don’t need an article directory.

However, I have a website that got crawled by google 100,000 times last month because I have one. It also increases my search engine saturation, (number of pages indexed by the search engines), daily. Right now that website is a 30,000 page website.

An article directory is good for SEO. It takes a little time to manage because you have to approve articles and put them into the right categories. Article dashboard is the best software to install. It’s easy to manage and free.

Let us install and manage your article directory for you.
Call 786-317-8774 or email info@blogs.pn for a free quote.

3. A Company Blog Installing a company blog like www.yourcompanyname.com/blog and posting to it daily allows you to easily add fresh daily content to your website.

It can also bring in new traffic for your website. A lot of people are less intimidated by your blog than your website. You can publish your press releases, announcements, and special offers as well. WordPress is the best software to install if you plan to add a blog to your website.

Professional Management for Business Blogs

4. A Forum or Message Board Owning a forum sounds a lot easier than it is. The best software for a forum is either PHPbb or vBulletin in my opinion.

But keep in mind that “Build it and they will come” is from a baseball movie and does not apply to websites, blogs and forums. You have to advertise your forum. You have to keep the spammers out of your forum. You have to add content to your forum daily so people will have something to read and comment on. You have to respond to people posting in your forum.

Forum management is almost a full time job from the very beginning, so if you are planning to install a forum, make sure you are ready to devote time to it or hire a professional forum manager to help you.

Let us install and manage your forum for you.
Call 786-317-8774 or email info@blogs.pn for a free quote.

5. Hit Counters & Stats Counters Another old tool to ignore. People do not believe you when you tell them a million visitors have been to your website today no matter what your little hit counter says. If you need to track stats, use google analytics or web trends.

6. Speaking Characters Use these to really annoy everyone who visits your website. I’m kidding . . . well a little. There are proper uses for certain websites for installing talking characters. However, if the reason you are thinking of installing a talking character is because you think it’s “really cool”, then don’t do it.

If the character has an actual purpose of explaining something that is not immediately obvious without the talking character, like this month’s special, then they can be useful.

8. Classifieds Ads Section Again, this is an item that has been around for ages. There are scripts that are easy to install that will help you offer a classified ad section to your website.

However, remember, you are responsible for every website you link to. Linking to bad websites will hurt you from an seo point of view. Allowing everyone to place a classified ad and a link to their website is inviting spammers, scammers, pornsters, and others to get links from your site to their site. If you are going to spend the time to approve every ad, then it can still be a useful tool.

9. Traffic Exchange Scripts Reciprocal links are dead. Don’t even consider a traffic exchange script or a webring.

10. Search My Website Scripts are actually very useful if your website is over 20 pages with a lot of content. It provides another way for users to find what they are looking for. You cannot make it too easy for users to navigate your website.

There are a lot of other website addons not covered here, but these are the most popular. In the next chapter we will move on to promoting your website after you have it built.

In Website Design Part 1 we went over The Design Your Website Quiz to find out how you will be designing your website. We covered;

A. I will be designing my own website.

B. I will be hiring someone I know to design my website

C. I will be hiring a company to design my website.

Chapter 6 – Website Design Part 1 can be found here

Website Design Part 2

D. I will just buy a website template or get a free template and use that.

E. I will be installing a CMS system like Joomla.

F. I don’t know.

I will just buy a website template or get a free template and use that.

A lot of people will tell you this is a terrible idea. There is a mindset that says if anyone else on the web is using the same template, then your website will somehow not be as professional as having an original design that you own all the rights to.

However, you have to keep in mind that someone else that used the template probably doesn’t sell the same thing you sell. The likelyhood of anyone seeing another website with the same template, then seeing yours is very low. So your users will not know the difference.

You certainly will not have the same content in it as someone else with the same template, so that is not an issue either. Take a look at this Runaway Teens Website. It was built using a free template.

Clicking here will show you it ranks number 1 in Google for runaway teens. Clicking here will show it also ranks number 1 in MSN for runaway teens. And clicking here will show it also ranks number 1 in yahoo for runaway teens.

So there is no seo reason for not using a free template or one that you buy for just a few bucks at places like monstertemplates.com.

I still recommend you have your own template designed, but if your budget is low, a free template can help you get your new web business off the ground.

I will be installing a CMS system like Joomla.

I am not a big fan of CMS systems, but some people like them and one person’s garbage is another person’s treasure. But do not believe that they are as simple to use as you will read they are. People who make a living installing them will tell you they are easy. Websites that sell these systems and addons for them will also tell you they are easy. They have their reasons.

I have had clients that wanted a CMS system. Most of them never end up using them because they find learning how to manage it is much more difficult than they were told. Unless you are willing to take the time to learn how to manage your content yourself, don’t go with a CMS like Joomla.

For those who are willing to put in the time to learn how to manage their content and believe they have the time to actually do that when changes need to be made to their site, then a CMS can work for you.

Some things to know.

1. There are a lot of free templates for these systems. Don’t let someone convince you that they are doing a ton of design work if they are just installing a theme. You can do that yourself once you learn how to use the CMS.

2. Don’t think that just because joomla.com says it’s so easy that anyone can install it, that really anyone can install it. Read the joomla forums and you will see just how many people did not fit into the “anyone” category and could not install it.

3. Beware of companies that try to sell you a CMS for thousands of dollars. Joomla and some others are free and some companies simply rebrand them as their own and sell them to unsuspecting clients.

4. On the same note, don’t think that just because Joomla and other CMS’s are free that you should not pay someone to install it and to get your first theme installed. People who do them all of the time can avoid many problems first-time users might encounter and they deserve to get paid for what they do.

Just go in with your eyes open. Don’t get taken and make sure you are really ready to manage your own content.

I Don’t Know

Don’t be embarrassed if your answer to the web design quiz was I don’t know how I will be designing my website. Most people who are starting a new web business are in that category.

For many people getting started is very confusing. There are web designers to deal with. There are coders and programmers to deal with. There are SEO people to deal with. There are internet marketers to deal with. There is adwords and other PPC programs. So people end up trying to hire good people in each category as they progress with their new web business.

Hiring a Project Manager

In my opinion, you should hire your SEO expert first. Let them help you plan your project from beginning to end. Let them pick the designers and help you create your business plan. Let your SEO person have the website built with SEO in mind so it is not an extra step.

Your SEO guide knows how the website will work and how it will be promoted later on and will have some features built in rather than it costing extra to add them later. By doing this you have an optimized website from the very beginning.

We can help you plan your project from beginning to end and take care of everything along the way. You deal just with us and we deal with everyone else for you. It’s simple and easy and you have someone to advise you every step of the way.

The New Web Business Guide Introduction can be found here. Chapter 5 – Planning Your Website Navigation can be found here

Ok, first I have to admit that I am a little harsh on website designers and website design companies. The reason is that the content that goes into your website is a lot more important than the shell you put it into.

Many people pay thousands of dollars to a website design company, then they want cheap content to put into their website. Search engines will not rank you higher because your logo is prettier than your competitors logo. Search engines will not rank you higher because you picked better colors than your competitor did.

You do need a professional looking website for your users. It builds trust if the website does not look amateurish. So web design is important to a degree, but again, it’s the content that will get you ranked higher in the search engines. it’s the content that will actually convince people to buy from you. It’s the content that will get people to bookmark you, link to you, share your link with their friends, and visit you mkore often.

So I just want you to keep website design in perspective. Do not spend most of your budget on website design and leave very little for content and promoting your website.

The Design Your Website Quiz

A. I will be designing my own website.

B. I will be hiring someone I know to design my website

C. I will be hiring a company to design my website.

D. I will just buy a website template or get a free template and use that.

E. I will be installing a CMS system like Joomla.

F. I don’t know.

A. I will be designing my own website.

Automated Software for Web Design: If you plan to use dreamweaver, frontpage, composer, or some other software that automatically creates code for you, it’s a mistake. Converting word docs into html pages is even worse. If you chose A and planned to use automated website design software, you should rethink your choice in the website design quiz.

If you don’t, you will have to hire someone to fix the code and optimize your website for the search engines later. SEO should be done as the website is built, not as an afterthought. Doing so will save you a lot of money in the long run. Automated Web Design Software will not create optimized code and therefore it’s useless.

I know how to write html, php, javascript, AJAX, or other code manually. If this applies to you, then you are ready to design your own website as long as you also know something about search engine optimization.

Just being a good coder and designer is not enough to build a website that will be successful in the search engines. You can do a two-part process by designing your own website, then hiring someone to optimize it, but it is much better when the designer actually knows SEO as well.

So, it’s your decision. If you feel confident that you can build and design a website that is also optimized for the search engines, or you plan to hire an SEO expert afterwards, then go for it. We will be covering how to optimize your website in the new web business guide, so if you follow along with those instructions you are probably ready to go.

B. I will be hiring someone I know to design my website.

There are horror stories you should know before you hire your relative, employee, or a friend to design your website. This almost never works out well for your online business. Many people do it and they usually sacrifice any opportunity they have to actually make money online becaus ethey want to hire someone they know or someone they know needs the extra work.

If that someone you know really does know web design and SEO and they have a track record of doing so successfully, then go ahead. But you need to approach them the same way you would any web design company that you don’t know.

You still need a contract no matter who they are. Even if it’s your son or daughter, they need to sign a contract. They need to learn how business is done just like anyone else if they plan to run a web design business.

You need to know turnaround time and the costs upfront. They need to know what you expect from them upfront. It’s still a business deal even if you know them.

Keep in mind that you may end up having to hire someone else to finish or fix the project later. In many cases, since they know you will be understanding because you are a friend or relative, they will make your website less of a priority than other projects from strangers. They know the client that does not know them very well will not be understanding about missed deadlines and shoddy work. So why should you be?

And especially beware of the friend or relative that is going to give you a huge discount or offer to do it for free because they are in the web design business. Again, they will not make your website design project their top priority. Paying clients always come first. Pay them full price and expect them to treat you like a paying client and not like a relative or friend.

C. I will be hiring a company to design my website.

As I said in the beginning of this chapter on web design, you need to watch your budget. Content, advertising, and promoting your website through link building, social bookmarking, etc. will be next and those cost money as well.

Unless you are building an ecommerce website, a website that depends on a lot of databases, or one that is very technical in nature, you should not be spending a ton of money on website design.

Do not allow the web design company to convince you that you need a lot of extra technical features that you do not need. You do not have to have flash. You do not want dynamic webpages that are created from a database rather than static html pages unless your business plan, products, and services demand you do so. Only if there is no other way to do it.

The preferred method of building your webpages is to build them in html no matter what the designer tells you. HTML is much easier to optimize and much cheaper to design. HTML pages will out-perform dynamic pages in the search engines. It’s a fact.

Again, there are websites that do require extra technical work. Custom shopping carts are an example. If you have hundreds or thousands of products, you will need to use databases for those. You would need a database if you are going to be calling on a lot of images or if you are allowing people to upload stuff to your website.

These are not the only examples, but I just wanted you to know where you might need to spend extra money on building your website. But then you are spending the money on technicians and coding, not design. Do not let someone convince you that the design portion of the job should cost a lot of money.

For many online businesses, all the designer really needs to provide is a main page, a contact page (with a mail form script that is secure and that does not work just for users who have outlook or outlook express), and a page called content.html.

Three pages. That is all the designer needs to build for many websites. You will be inclined to order more pages because of the navigation, but you do not need the designer for this.

Example; You have a law firm. You planned your navigation to have the following pages in your website;

main page
contact page
about us page
privacy policy
terms of service
each lawyer gets their own page for a profile
a successful cases page
a blog

You have the designer build the main page, the contact us page, and content.html. Then you write the content you want into the content page and save it as about.html. Then you write content into content.html for your privacy page and save it as privacy.thml. You do the same for terms of service, each lawyer’s page, and your successful cases page.

Content.html already had the sidebar or top navigation menu or whatever. All you have to do is add a link in the menu for each page you build. Remember to add those links to your main page and contact page as well.

I don’t expect web designers to agree because they want to charge you for designing each page. But the only thing that changes in those extra pages is the content and what you save the file as and the links you add to the menu. They are not designing each page.

The bottom line is plan your budget wisely. You need to know that you will have monthly costs associated with promoting your website and search engine marketing. You need to remember that great original content is going to be at least as costly as design.

There is an old saying on the web about building websites. You build the first one for show and the rest for dough. You can make money online with a website that costs $500 to build just as easy as you can make money with a website that costs $10,000 to build.

In the next post we will go over the other choices like CMS and using templates.

Now you should have your list of keywords to target, you have your domain name, and you have hosting for your website. Now you start building or designing your site right? Sorry. Not yet. You have to have a plan.

Know Your Target Audience

We covered this a little in the chapter about choosing your keywords and key phrases, but we need to mention it again here.

Let’s say you are a moving company. You provide truck rentals, self moving options, and full service moves. That means you have three different types of people coming to your website that each want something different.

You have to plan your website so that you can make it easy for each of these target groups get to where you want them to go in your website whether that be the contact form, an estimate form, signing up for a newsletter, calling you on the phone, or hitting an order or buy now button.

The Main Page

When most poeple think of and plan their website, they think of how they will get people from the front page into the rest of the website. They see the front page as their “doorway” into their website.

This kind of thinking will cost you sales. Every single page in your website can be a landing page. That means that people may enter your website by landing on any page, so not everyone will even see your front page. Not if you plan correctly that is.

Search engines crawl and index web “pages”, not web “sites”. Every page in your website can get a search engine listing for the keywords and phrases chosen for that page. So keep this in mind as we plan your website.

For now, we will talk about those that do land on your main or front page. Remember we had three types of people who might land on your front page after a search or by clicking a link. Now we need to help those people get to what they want.

You need to plan and build your main page to give easy choices to your visitors. Do not depend on your visitors using your navigation menu to get to where you want them to go. Don’t think that because you have all of this great navigation in a really cool menu that people will use it to find what they want.

Make it easy. With our moving company website example, we would build the navigation menu, then more importantly, in the top center, the most obvious place for people to look, you will give them three simple choices.

1. Do you want to rent a truck for your move? or just Moving Truck Rental.

2. Are you ready to save money with self-moving where you pack the boxes and load the truck?

3. Do you want us to handle everything for you so you don’t have to worry?

You can word those any way you want as long as it clearly explains to each type of visitor where to go to get what they are looking for. Your main or front page should be designed to divide and conquer. Split up the different types of users and send them to the section of your website they are interested in or send them right to the page where you can close the sale.

Understanding How Your Potential Customers Get To Your Website And Giving Them What They Want

This is the thing you need to understand. A user goes to a search engine. They type in moving truck rental let’s say. We do not want that user to get to your main page. It’s ok iof they do. We set up the main page to help them get to the page they really want, but that is still not the best thing that can happen.

The best thing that can happen is that your page that is all about moving truck rentals is the page that ranks well for that phrase and the page that user lands on. That means they type in moving truck rental and with one click go right to the page where they can rent a moving truck.

Imagine that. Giving them the exact thing they are searching for. The search engine’s job is to provide relevant results to it’s users. Your job is to make sure that your content is the relevant content the search engine provides. Work with the search engines not against them. Don’t try to trick the search engines. That will cost you in the long run.

Plan to build pages that are optimized for the keywords and phrases that are really relevant to each page. Make it very easy for the customer to make their purchase. Give the user exactly what they are looking for and you will convert sales.

In the next section of this chapter we will show you an example of how to build a proper navigation plan for your website.

I started a little experiment with Google Page Creator awhile back. You can see the first post here and an update here.

We built a webpage with Google Page Creator and optimized the text for Content Provider. It was indexed within 2 hours.

We did not build links to the page and just let it sit for 5 weeks. So far, it doesn’t rank within the top 100 listings in google, msn, or yahoo.

So the content alone isn’t getting the page ranked well, but it has only been 5 weeks. Now I will start building a few links to the page and see how things change over the next month or so and update the blog again to let you know how it does then.

I know experiments like this can be boring to some, but it’s a grewat way to learn what works and what doesn’t.

I wanted to update the Google Page Crator Experiment for those interested in this project.

It’s only been 6 days since I built the site to target the phrase content provider and the blog post about the Google Page Creator Experiment is already ranking in google for the phrase content provider, but not the page I built there yet.

As I said, it’s not even a week old yet, so no expectation of being ranked yet. It was indexed within two hours though, so that alone makes it useful. If you are launching a new website, building a google page through google page creator could help you get indexed faster.

If google indexes the page you build at google page creator and follows the links to your new website, maybe you could get a site indexed at the same time.

Try it and see.
