I’ve been to a lot of seo company websites and like the rest of my inbox is inundated with offers from seo companies.
Some offer me top 10 rankings in Google in 30, 60, or 90 days. Some offer to increase my link popularity virtually overnight. Some offer white hat seo, some offer black hat seo, and I’ve even been offered gray hat seo, whatever that is.
Some of these guys are very well known and others just claim they are very well known. I’m not sure being well-known is the criteria for picking an seo company. If they are well-known at least they did a good job of branding their own name.
But are these claims real? Can these seo companies, like my own, really help you with your website? What should you really be looking for when choosing an SEO company?
Guaranteed Top Rankings in Google
If they promise or guarantee top rankings in Google within such and such amount of time, then you don’t want to choose them. No one has a special relationship with Google that would allow them to get you into some kind of express lane.
Beyond that, this seo company has not even looked at your website or researched your keywords and your competition. They don’t even know how long your website has been around or the history behind the domain name. How would they have a clue as to how long it will take to get you a high ranking in Google.
That’s like calling a mechanic on the phone and telling him you have a car and it’s not running and you don’t know what is wrong with it and the mechanic saying he can fix it good as new today! He doesn’t know why your car isn’t working. try getting a mechanic to promise you or guarantee you that.
Beware of the seo companies making these promises.
Who are you talking to? And who will be doing your work?
Are you speaking with a salesperson or a real SEO Professional? If you are not speaking with the person who will be working on your project, be wary of what they tell you. Many SEO companies have a sales department that just says whatever they can to get you in the door.
Once you are in the door and you have laid some money down, they pass it off to the people who actually do the work. Are these workers located in the US? the UK? Europe? India? Asia?
I’m not against outsourcing some things. I’ve done it before and now our policy is not to do so because the quality of the work suffered. So I would want to know who is actually doing the work on my project. I would not sign with an SEO company that does not let me communicate directly with the person in charge of my project.
Coders from all over the world can be as good as coders from anywhere else in the world. But Americans know how to sell to Americans. The British know how to sell to people in the UK. Europeans know how to sell people in Europe, etc.
When we do SEO work for a British client, we use british writers for your content. When we do bsuiness with a client based in the US, we use American writers. It’s a cultural issue.
What is their focus?
If the SEO person you are speaking with is more concerned with talking about link popularity and top listings in search engines or technical SEO terms than they are about your conversion rate, your ROI, and how to improve your sales, then you are talking to the wrong SEO company.
There are so many articles on the web and blogs that talk about seo, but few that actually talk about making you more sales. Many of the people who do SEO work professionally don’t even know they have lost focus on what is important.
They learned more about link popularity, search engine rankings, etc. and they begin to believe those are the most important things to focus on. They forget that you are building an online business to make money. That you want to know how we can increase your sales and profitability.
Let the SEO person do most of the talking for 5 minutes. If they are not talking to you about sales by then, hang up.
Ask them how much sales experience they have both on and offline. If they do not have real sales experience they are not the best person to market your products for you.
None of that includes just selling seo and webmaster services. Your marketing person should have experience at selling products and services besides just selling seo services. If the first thing they did was go on the web and say to themselves, “Cool, the SEO business looks lucrative, so I’ll be an SEO guru”, then they don’t have any experience selling product.
Ask them to show you real results they have achieved for clients that you can call and actually speak with. Be sure they are giving you real references and not some friend of theirs who will say anything they want them to say. Ask that reference if the seo company helped them make more sales.

I have more than 30 years of actual sales and sales management experience. 13 of those years are experience selling on the Internet. I’ve made money with affiliate marketing, buying and selling and appraising domain names, and I’ve sold a ton of product on the web.
I know some of my peers will disagree with some of what I wrote here, but there are a lot of people getting into the SEO business that really cannot help you make sales and many of them are outright scams.
Whether you choose us or choose another seo company, keep in mind that your goal is to make more money and your seo company should be focused on doing just that.
