I recently met a gentleman who is a retired hired hand. He’s done a lot of things in his life, mostly handyman work - electricity, plumbing, fix-it type stuff, etc. Ultimate blue collar man. He wanted to talk to me about running a part-time Internet business.
Of course, I was encouraging. I always am. At least that’s the lie I tell people to cover the real truth until it manages to squeeze itself out of my blistering soul.
I had to tell him that the essence of everything online is SEO. He gave me that look dogs get when they get confused. People get too.
After I explained what search engine optimization is, I told the gentleman about all the ways you can make money online - in about fifteen minutes. I covered every detail about Internet marketing and gave away all the secrets of the Internet. I really spilled my guts. And he took it all in. I suspect that he’s putting it all to the test right this minute. In a couple of days you’ll be hearing about this man, I’m sure. He’ll be the richest man on earth and all because I shared my secrets of Internet marketing with him.
If you’re buying any of this then I have some property in Atlantis I’d like to sell you. The fact is, you can’t be an instant success online and you can’t learn everything there is to know about SEO and Internet marketing in fifteen minutes. I studied Internet marketing for a year-and-a-half before I ever built my first commercial website and during that time the landscape of Internet marketing changed considerably. Even then, with all of that studying, I fell on my face a hundred times before I met an ounce of success. Reality says it’s not easy.
It helps to have an advocate, someone who’s been around awhile who can steer you in the right direction when your veering wrong. I wish I’d had that in 2003 when I built my first commercial website. I’ve learned a lot about Internet marketing since then and I’ve got to say that the more it changes (and it changes a lot) then the more it stays the same. What I mean is, every newfangled development is just an addition to the old ways that have proven to work. Some new ways improve the web and some just make it more difficult for new Internet marketers to get their minds around it all. The most important thing to remember about Internet marketing is that it doesn’t happen in fifteen minutes. If you can prepare yourself for that reality then you can brace yourself to learn - to really learn - what it takes to succeed online. And anyone can do it - even retirred handy men.
