Most of the comments on Naylor’s blog and people I have discussed this post with seem to be of the opinion that the client should bow down and ask for forgiveness. Organic Google traffic is needed too much to survive without it. I completely disagree.
This may sound strange, but I’d have to agree with this. Imagine an SEO firm that says “you don’t need me.” It’s true. SEO is a beneficial science and I highly recommend it for most businesses, but some business models can survive without it. If you exist in a highly competitive field where ranking high in the search engines is difficult you may be able to nose your way in through pay-per-click and other online advertising models. The bottom line is your return on investment. I believe future online business models will rely on that truth more and more and you’ll see less reliance on organic search. But I still wouldn’t give up on SEO.
